Food and Retail - Case Study 1
Acumen helps Food Processing Company reduce costs through pre-treatment of waste and recycling initiatives
Acumen’s customer - a company that processes and packs cooked meat products - faced challenges stemming from traditional waste management practices and the complex legislation affecting the food industry.
Their business issues were:
- the majority of their waste was going to landfill, without any pre-treatment
- the Company’s waste management practices did not meet future legislation requirements
- recycling was not taking place, which had an impact on revenue
- health and safety on their site was affected by a high number of vehicle movements
Acumen reviewed the waste management practices at all of the Company’s sites. We were able to identify areas where compliance could be fulfilled, where we could improve best practice, and provide sustainable cost savings for our customer:
- Acumen proposed and implemented recycling routines to make sure that cardboard and plastic waste no longer attracted landfill tax. This also resolved the need for pre-treatment
- their waste streams were subject to Animal By-Product Legislation so we developed compliant disposal routes
- fewer waste collections. This has reduced the number of vehicle movements on site, and improved health and safety
Acumen worked closely with the customer to ensure full compliance with the rigorous Animal By-Products Legislation. We also achieved a reduction in our customer’s costs by planning and implementing the recycling of suitable dry waste streams.
Our customer is now enjoying the benefits of reduction in waste to landfill and reduced vehicle movements, as well as the assurance that they are legally compliant.
