The company was established in Stockton on Tees as Limpia in 1994, specialising in the provision of waste management services for solid and liquid, bulk and packaged waste. Complementary growth then occurred, with the business expanding to provide Industrial Site Services, Asbestos Management and Outsourced Waste Services.
In 2004, the business was rebranded to become Acumen, and established its headquarters at Knottingley, West Yorkshire. Later acquiring offices and waste facilities in Stockton on Tees, Keighley, York, Immingham and Wolverhampton.
In 2016, Acumen were recognised as one of the fastest growing hazardous waste focused businesses on the Catalyst CIWM Fast 50 list of 2016, which was reviewed against almost 1,000 businesses across the waste industry.
Today the business goes from strength to strength, offering Waste Management and Industrial Site Services contracting on an international basis.
Kris Sutton, Finance Director: Kris joined Acumen as Finance Director in 2012, having gained 20 years of experience within the finance and accountancy field. Kris’ early career was with Leeds CF&A as a Trainee Accountant, followed by 12 years with one of the largest independent media agencies in the UK. Kris is qualified as Charted Accountant MCMA, an Accounting Technician MAAT and is an Investors In People (IIP) Internal assessor.
Leon Kirk, Managing Director: Leon joined Acumen in 1996 and was appointed Managing Director in 2011. Leon has over 30 years of direct industry experience having started his career working for a multi-disciplined hazardous waste and industrial services business. Leon is a member of IOSH Directing Safely.
Andy Crossley, Director: Andy joined Acumen as a Director in 2013. Andy has 20 years of direct industry experience, initially with Shanks in their landfill business, followed by a decade in the civil engineering and remediation industry with Buckingham Group where he was General Manager of their Land Regeneration business. Andy holds a B.Eng (Hons) in Civil Engineering from Leeds University and is a MCIWM Chartered Waste Manager.IOSH Directing Safely.

Working alongside an apprenticeship training agency, Acumen employs a number of apprentices across the business and has demonstrable success of working with people aged 16 (or over) to combine working with studying towards a work-based qualification.
